Abysma: Maw of Shadows
About Abysma: Maw of Shadows
Dude I can't sleep. Still thinking about Abysma.
Remember what Sarah said about it? "Descend into the depths of a mysterious dark abyss in this 2D platformer. Play as a wizard surrounded by treacherous traps, where careful movement and illumination are key to survival. Navigate through darkness, using light to uncover hidden dangers and illuminate your path. Beware of lurking enemies in the darkness, ready to strike when you least expect it. Will you uncover the secrets hidden in the shadows?"
Man that was SO wrong. It's like describing pizza as "bread with toppings." Technically true, but completely misses what makes it special.
Okay so the light isn't just a flashlight. It's like, a *tool* that changes the whole world. When I first played I was just flicking it on and off to see stuff, like "oh, a trap, better jump over it." But then I hit this one part, and I kept dying, over and over. And I was like, what the heck?
Then I noticed, when I turned the light *off*, this one platform would appear! Or like, a wall would disappear. And the "enemies"? They're not just lurking. Some of them are like, *attracted* to light, or they only move when it's dark. So it's not about "illuminating your path." It's about strategically turning light *on and off* to change the level itself.
It's like a puzzle game, but disguised as a platformer. Your not just jumping over stuff, your figuring out these weird light puzzles. And the sound design? When you turn the light off, it's just this like, *whoosh* and everything changes. So cool.
I played for like 3 hours straight last night, totally lost track of time. Honestly, it's super clever. Makes you feel really smart when you figure something out. I don't usually like puzzle platformers but this one just clicked. You gotta try it. Seriously. It's fun. Really, really fun.
